Learn to build correct English sentences and avoid common errors.
English sentences follow specific patterns. Understanding these patterns helps you
write correctly and avoid common Norwegian-English errors.
English uses SVO order: Subject - Verb - Object
- Subject: Who/what does the action
- Verb: The action
- Object: Who/what receives the action
"The cat (S) caught (V) a mouse (O)."
Frequency adverbs (always, never, often, usually) go BEFORE the main verb:
- "I always eat breakfast."
- "I eat always breakfast." (incorrect)
But AFTER the verb "be":
- "She is always happy."
- "She always is happy." (incorrect)
"I like me to play football." - "I like to play football."
"It is many people here." - "There are many people here."
"I have lived here in three years." - "I have lived here for three years."
"I am agree." - "I agree." (no "am")
Yes/No questions: Put auxiliary verb first
- Statement: "She can swim."
- Question: "Can she swim?"
Wh-questions: Wh-word + auxiliary + subject + verb
- "Where does she live?"
- "What are you doing?"
Important: Don't forget the auxiliary (do/does/did)!
- "Where she lives?" (incorrect)
- "Where does she live?" (correct)
In present simple questions, use do/does + base verb:
- "Does she like pizza?" (not "Does she likes")
- "Do you play football?"
The main verb stays in base form - don't add -s!
