Nouns and Adjectives

Nouns are naming words (things, people, places).
Adjectives are describing words (they describe nouns).

Together, they help us communicate clearly!

Nouns: Singular and Plural

Singular = one thing Plural = more than one Regular plurals - add 's': - cat \to cats - book \to books - dog \to dogs Words ending in s, sh, ch, x - add 'es': - bus \to buses - wish \to wishes - box \to boxes Words ending in consonant + y - change y to 'ies': - baby \to babies - city \to cities Irregular plurals: - child \to children - man \to men - woman \to women - tooth \to teeth - mouse \to mice

Adjectives

Adjectives describe nouns: - a big dog - a happy girl - beautiful flowers Adjectives come before the noun: - English: a red car (adjective + noun) - Norwegian: en rød bil Common adjectives: - Size: big, small, tall, short - Colour: red, blue, green, yellow - Feeling: happy, sad, angry, excited - Opinion: good, bad, nice, beautiful

Comparing with Adjectives

Comparing two things - add 'er': - tall \to taller (Emma is taller than Tom.) - small \to smaller - fast \to faster Comparing three or more - add 'est': - tall \to tallest (Emma is the tallest in the class.) - small \to smallest - fast \to fastest Long adjectives - use 'more' and 'most': - beautiful \to more beautiful \to most beautiful - interesting \to more interesting \to most interesting Irregular: - good \to better \to best - bad \to worse \to worst
